How can we be happy when our lives are filled with suffering?

Bhante Sujato wrote about happiness in this post recently. You can check it out at the Patacara Blog.

The first question I ask myself when I think about happiness is:

When I think about happiness, I think about happiness that is not dependent upon any kind of external situation, and that includes happiness that depends upon material conditions. I think about a happiness that comes only from ourselves, a happiness that arises only from what we ourselves are doing. I think about a happiness that does not depend on anything outside of ourselves.

It’s pretty obvious that this is a rather narrow definition of happiness, since if we don’t include our relationships with other beings, or if we don’t include our material wealth, and if we don’t include our body, or our health, or if we don’t include the various states of consciousness that we’ve experienced in the course of our life and that we continue to experience, then most of us would say that we’re not happy. So what is happiness?

According to the Buddha, when a wise person is subject to suffering, the wise person will experience compassion for those who are suffering. But most people are not wise, instead they are suffering, and they suffer in different ways.

When someone is happy, they may not have any awareness of what they are doing. This means that they may be unaware of what they are doing to themselves, and thus what they are doing to others. But this is not true of someone who is not happy. They know they are harming themselves and others. When they see this, they are sorry. They don’t want to do it. But they do it anyway. It is because they are not unhappy, because they are unaware of the fact that they are suffering, that they are acting unwisely. They cannot see what they are doing. So they are unhappy.

Somebody is happy and satisfied, for example, if they have money, but they don’t have wisdom or freedom.

To have wisdom and to be free from desire, we have to practice the four stages of purification as described in the Dhamma. This is what leads to happiness and peace of mind.

Suffering in the bad way does not occur if we have true understanding, for suffering in the bad way has some positive aspect, but it is still suffering. So we are suffering in the good way, which is called happiness.

When we are free from desire, we are not unhappy. We are happy.

What is sad about being happy is that we take ourselves to be so happy that we begin to doubt our own happiness. The desire to be happy begins to arise, because we start to think “There is nothing to be happy about. We don’t deserve to be happy, so we better not get too happy.” And we start to believe this.

By the way, as far as the happiness that you attribute to the person who is free from desire, don’t think that she is the “most happy”. It is actually you who is the most happy. If you can realize this, then it is actually you who is the happiest. If not, well, there is the possibility that you will go through the entire life without realizing this, even though it is the truth.

“Suffering in the good way” is suffering with a positive aspect. This is because it does not lead to sorrow or anxiety. It’s a kind of suffering that allows for a certain level of peace of mind. You could say it’s a suffering that can take one from the lower plane to the middle or upper planes. And it’s in this sense that suffering in the good way is called “good”. It may be more than suffering in the lower planes, but it is still suffering. And this is called suffering in the good way.

The main point of this is that since you are able to see the truth, when you suffer in the good way, you can see the truth, and you can see the nature of the suffering. And since you can see the truth, there is a chance that you could put an end to suffering, or at least, it can stop getting worse. You see that the nature of suffering is suffering itself. You understand that the way out of this suffering is to stop suffering. So you are able to see the truth and that is why you are able to stop suffering. This is why it is in this way that suffering in the good way can be a step in the process of purification.

From a Western view, we tend to think that suffering is bad, but for us, suffering in the good way is good. This is because we are conditioned to think that suffering is negative. For us, suffering in the bad way is the kind of suffering that gets you in a mess. Suffering in the bad way doesn’t help anything. It does not lead to any good results. We do not like to think that we can benefit from suffering in the bad way. For us, it doesn’t really feel like we can learn anything from it. But we can benefit from suffering in the good way, and this is why it is good.

In order for suffering in the good way to really benefit you, you need to see that there is a way to stop suffering. You must understand that you are not suffering as yourself, and you are not really suffering. You are the mind, and you are nothing but the mind. The true you is the mind, so the mind is not suffering. It is the body, which is your vehicle, which is the form, which is the place where you get the sense of I and mine.

All of this, all of our experiences are in this place and these are the forms of the objects that we are seeing, so we are not the seeing. The sense of I and mine is always the mind, but it’s not the mind, it’s not an entity, it’s not a person, it’s not anything. It’s just the process of seeing. This is why there is suffering. It is because you are only seeing the objects. And if you see an object, you have a particular kind of sense of I and mine because you are looking at the form.

You need to see that this way is not the way to stop
